I was getting ready to go riding the over day, when I noticed a KX 250 in a buddies truck. I asked as to when he got it, as its the 1st time I'd seen it.
He told me he purchased it new in 2001 while stationed in North Carolina. He bought it with the intention of running a few races and doing some trail riding. Unfortunately it was stolen 6 months after he bought it.

He reported it to the local authorities, but knew it was gone... Fast forward 6 years...
He received a phone call from the North Carolina State Police department. Did you report a stolen bike. We recovered a bike and the serial number (what was left of it from someone trying to file it off) matches your reported stolen bike. Arrangements were made to have the bike shipped to his home. He thought since the bike was 6 years old, it would be a mess. He thought at least he could part it out and get a few dollars to spend on his quad. When they opened the bike's crate, he almost fell down. The bike was in impeccable shape. New tires, new plastic, excel rims, fresh chain and sprockets, the only stock item looked to be the bars. Based on the condition of the exterior I'd assume the engine was it good shape too, especially since it started on the 3rd kick.
Needless to say he is keeping the bike, and is re-learning how to ride on two wheels instead of four. He does plan on pulling the head to check the bore condition, but from what I saw, it should be in great shape.
The moral of the story, good things do come to those that wait.
