I am wondering if there is some solution for lighting on the 87 KX5.  I have checked around for Lighting Coils, but there is nothing listed for that series of bikes (86-89?)  There ARE coils for the series before and after though.  What gives?  Is there an economical solution?  :(

Yep...I am AZTT AZ_Brad!  BD shows only 92 and up.  I'm not sure what I can do.  Certainly someone has put lights on one of these thinks!

Give 'em a call, they do some trick stuff for not a lot of money... For instance, if you want a wide ratio CR450F they will hook you up for right at $500 for the gears and installation.

Hey, wait a minute.... Did you get ShanMans KreX?

On a different note, come join us at Speedworld Sunday

Actually, it is in the works
It sounds like a great machine, and I'm not the type to worry about the age of a machine.  I just need to figure out the lighting because I need to Dual Purpose the think for rides in Utah and Colorado.   Adding $500-600 to the bike for lighting isn't really a good option for me.

i recently andded lights to my 89 kx500.they dont make lighting coil for 87 thru 89 kx500's,but here's what i did.i found 92 kx500 stator, stator plate, flywheel and CDI[5 wire CDI]on ebay[90 thru 2002 will work].all these parts bolt right on no modification needed.then i just purchased a 90 thru 2002 lighting coil from Baja designs.i was able to set my bike up for about $350 [that includes taillight and headlight].i have extra cdi ["92" has 5 Wires] i will sell if your interested.

Yeah Paul, looks like KreX might just stay in the family after all, which is good, because it's a great bike. I think it time for me to saddle up on something else simply for a change of pace...just as long as it's big-bore pace right?  :D
