New guy from Dayton, Nv
« on: May 03, 2007, 08:19:48 AM »
Hi all. My name is Doug and I live in Dayton Nv. I have been riding dirt bikes since I was 6 years old (some 30 years now).

Last Thursday I finally got my dream bike, a '97 KX500. I have ridden numerous big bores but have always wanted a big KX. I traded my '89 LT250R Quadracer which was totally stock and in very good shape (it still had the original Dunlop tires on it).

What I got was a '97 KX500 with a '98 motor. It has quit a few goodies like Pro Taper bars with a Scotts damper, MSR clutch perch and lever, IMS tank (I think its a 3.3 gal), FMF pipe and silencer, FMF suspension front and rear, DID Gold chain, unknown brand alum. rear disc guard, and probably a couple of other things I'm forgetting.

Sorry to ramble on so much but I really love this bike. I really love this site also, I found it by accident while researching info for the KX (and there is a lot of great info. to be found here. I already gave the search function a good workout).

Anyhow thanks for a great site and thanks for having me.

Doug.

Glad to hear from another new k5 guy.  I had always jumped on my best friends kx500

 Welcome to the club!

Welcome. I'm new also, and also just got a 97 kx 500. I bought the bike last spring, but raced it as a basket-case. Over the winter and with all of my spare change, I have really created a monster. Maybe Frankenstein, if you could see the back fender.
I have ridden a 250 for years now, and am very used to the power and suspension. The 500, especially now, has some sweet ponies with the control you need.
May I suggest a steering stabilizer? Mine had one on it when I bought it, and I didn't see the point. After forgetting to hook it back-up, I now see the the difference. Much more stable in the rough stuff. Later!

Uh, guess I was speed reading or something and missed the Scott's dampner. Here's another tip, ride with a shortened silencer. I cut my FMF Powercore in half. Now, I tear up fenders instead of subframes and silencers!!!
