I have a cell phone I dissconnected service from and a friend of mine told me that even without a service connection you can still dial 911.I cant dial 911 to try it,but if its true I will carry it in my fanny pack on rides for an emergency.Does any one know if this is true?

I've heard the same thing. You could probably call your former service provider, or any service provider for that matter, and ask them for sure. Or, any police, fire, or ambulance service could probably tell you too.

The other day I drove by a fire that had just started on the freeway and tried to call 911 with my cell phone I had canceled service with and it just rang and rang.I had driven to a store and used a pay phone and the cell phone was still ringing, the pay phone had an answer on the 2nd ring, wonder if anyone would have ever answered the cell phone?

Yea you can still dial 911, even with my prepaid phone I can, so thats a good idea to have it along incase of an emergency.
