Kx5`s gas suction.
« on: August 20, 2006, 10:06:59 AM »
Hey guys,
Anyone know what kind of gas mileage you get from the KX500? I have a lot of dez riding coming up. Someone told me these things really suck the gas and blah blah blah only 50 miles to a large IMS tank. I`m hoping he`s seriously uninformed.

Thanks,
Jack

This is almost impossible to accurately answer your question. There are SO many variables to what dictates "fuel milage". First off how will you even measure milage on a stock KX500? (unless you have already added an odometer of course). Gearing, relative engine load, rider throttle input, all play major roles in fuel economy (or lack of)

I was seeing ~ 40 miles to a tank riding fast "A" singletrack out here in Arizona on the stock tank.

I can see around 40 miles. Mines dry after a couple hours of playing in the mud. these things suck some gas!

I was looking for a ballpark idea. If you can get near 40 miles to a tank, then no problem. Reason I ask is my favorite dex loop is about 60 miles and I`m pretty sure I can make it without stopping with the tank I have. I`ll have the bike geared tall so that will help things.

thanks,

Get your jetting perfect and you will not have any problems at all. I was burning 4 stock tanks a day running drag and after getting my jetting on spec, I was running 1 and sometimes 1 and a half.

I definitely need to look at the jetting. The bike idles like the choke is on. The low jet is a #58 so I`m going to try going down a notch or two till it idles halfway ok, plus the main is a #175. The jetting to try, according to FMF, (Gnarly pipe) is 172 for the dez. Guess I`ll be sorting out the bike on the first time out for a while. Gotta have a good running motor ya know. I`ve looked at the jetting thread here, lots of good info.
