Steering Stem Interchange for KX500?
« on: May 22, 2020, 07:23:01 AM »
I'm curious if the KX500 steering stems are the same for all of the later bikes?

For instance, is the original stem from my 1990 the same stem as a 1997 and the same as a 2000 mode?

The critical dimension I am concerned with is the diameter where it presses into the lower triple clamp.
My 1990 stem has a straight 30mm diameter through the lower clamp and lower bearing.
What is that diameter on a later KX500 with the 46mm KYB forks?

Stems from modern bikes like the KX450F are larger in the lower clamp (about 30.15mm to 30.20mm).
Some guys are knurling the stems and/or the clamps to achieve a press-fit for a fork swap...
I am aware that EMIG and others make conversion stems, I just want to know the dimensions of the later KX500 stem & clamps.

your 90 stem is too small to fit the newer lower clamps.
