POWER VALVE OVERCLOSING
« on: October 16, 2005, 11:34:19 AM »
Today I finally decided to take off pipe and look at the power valve.
I hadn't really understood the big deal about over closing power valves
till now. Mine were overclosing which I now see that means they weren't
closed when they should have been. I ended up using a .125 inch ball
bearing under the stop bolt on left side of cylinder. Total time to remove
pipe and covers to get to power valve rod and replace was only 30 mins.
My bike has never sounded right when idling and always felt kinda
sluggish up to 1/4 throttle. I've only ridden it on street a little so far but it
now idles with a sharp "pop pop pop" now and it jumps with acceleration
as soon as you touch the throttle now. I'm excited about my next trail
ride.

Is the ball bearing just trapped between the side cover screw and the rack and pinion rod :?: Is the ball bearing just loose and allowed to move around in between the rod and cover screw :?:

Yes. Its just loose behind the bolt on left side of cylinder. Its too big to jam anything. I had the cover off the right side of cylinder when I was checking the valve and pulling it through its stroke and it works just as smooth as before.

The ball bearing is an easy and pretty typical way of shimming it. It is contained and so can't get lodged anywhere it shouldn't be. I though I was smart and tried making a custom bolt but it was a lot of work and didn't work in the end.  The balls are available at a bicycle store in unlimited diameters. Cam.

Cam is right about the bearings. Mine came from the bike shop. I have a lot of different sizes all that fit bicycle components.

Doordie I owe ya.. Thanks for the tuning tip!

I also recently did a complete rebuild of my top end. I too found that my power valve was over closing by about 5mm.  I read all the tips and tricks about fixing this. In my scenario I was simply able to line up the Rod thing one gear spline over from the dots. This made everything line up perfect. Put everything back together and it started first kick (that never happened before) it still starts first kick and runs like a champ!

afritts4u,

The Kawasaki-japs is good thinkers, but they "over do-it" this time with KIPS.
The same with the ignition which fire 2 times each revolutions.
