'86 kx80 Shock Oil Change
« on: June 10, 2018, 02:18:59 AM »
I'm new to this forum and new to Kawasakis in general. I picked up this bike to fix up for the grandkids. The shop manual is somewhat confusing on how to replace the oil in the rear shock. There was very little oil and no pressure in the shock, and I doubt that it had ever been serviced. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi oldpoo, welcome to the site.  If the shock is out of oil and has no pressure, I would seriously consider buying a shock rebuild kit to keep it from leaking out again.  We have this handy video posted to the site that explains how to rebuild a dirt bike shock.  I used it to rebuild the shock for a 88 KDX 200, which will be pretty close to your shock in design, and it still applied.  Once you have the shock rebuilt and full of oil, you can go to your local bike shop (or sometimes a tire shop) and have it re-pressurized with nitrogen.  That should do the trick.

Perhaps I have a dirt bike addiction?
