anyone have any luck with bigger carbs? how bout a 44mm? what work has been done to the engine?

I guess I'll be the one to ask...Why?  The 500 already passes everything except a gas can at the van, and will run will over 100mph with the right gearing in stock trim.  What more can one ask for?

i guess some people feel the need to go faster. i agree that the 500 is fast but i am into speed and i want more power. i am never satisfied with what i have. soooo has anyone run bigger carbs with any luck?

I am looking to install the 44mm mikuni on my KX500 3 wheeler. It is a 1996 motor.  Does anyone hear have any experience installing this carb. with this motor?  Baseline jetting, correct number slide?  All info. and specs will be greatly aprreciated.

Have not done this YET. However ive given it serious thought my-self, please post your results with this.  NEED MORE POWER!!! Its like a drug.

My old KX500B2 -86 have now VM44.
There is something where to start:
Jet Needle: 7DH2, 7DH3
Needle Jet: CC-0
Needle Valve: 3.5 (=3.5mm)
Fuel Tap: drill to 3.5mm.
Slide: to safety only brass, NO aluminium
Mainjet: 600-800 (2.1-2.3mm?)
Stock KX500B2 with stock VM40 MJ#380, but my KX need with VM40 MJ#520-540 and now with VM44 MJ#2.3mm+PowerJet#70.
Not sure, but I guess that stock KX with VM44 MJ#600 (about 2.1mm), but try rather little bigger first?

Bump for old thread.  A 44mm should give 3-4hp more on top-end.  I have a vm44 laying around and I'm interested in making it work on the KX5.  Thinking about installing one of Thunderproducts U.F.O on the throttle slide.  Claimed to give round bore carbs much better response, have read on other forums claiming that it does indeed work.

I don't think any one is running the VM style carbs anymore, at least for performance. Most are running the Lectron of the big Mikuni flatslide.

As for the UFO, I ran them on a snowmobile, can't say they gave it more power but I would say that it was more responsive, for the money it was a good investment.

What is the biggest mikuni flatslide they make?  From what I remember it's like a 41mm? I need bigger than that! I dont really want to mess with the lectron stuff as I have most experience and parts availability with Keihin and Mikuni.

I believe your right about the size of the mikuni flatside being 41mm, I would guess that it will flow better and more than the 44 round slide. Round slides are old school, the newer flatslides flow way better. As far as screwing with lectron, there really isn't much to them, they are quite easy to adjust, but hey, to each his own, whatever works.

Here is an interesting link to modified mikuni carbs.  It leads me to believe that a pwk39 bored to 41mm could produce almost the same cfm numbers as a round-bore 44mm mikuni.  Alot easier too.

yeah you can make a mikuni 41.5 flow more then a 45mm round mikuni.
