I have a 97 500 and I was recently playing around with the triple clamps and noticed they have identical offset as my 2010 kx450f stock clamps which is 24.5mm. I would think the 2001 should be the same. I just installed some Ride Engineering 22mm clamps on the 500 to see what happens. I'm also running 2017 air forks on it.

full feed back will be good when you finish testing it , did you spring convert the air fork , i done a few set with a big improvement , plus a revalve as well . a lot less friction and know more mucking around setting air pressures all day.

I rode this past year with the air forks actually. I just put the new clamps on. The stock air forks were a big upgrade over the 97 forks even though they had been revalved. However, they are still too stiff for the roots and rocks for woods riding. Even with the compression backed all the way out and the inner tube pressure at 125psi they sag too much yet somehow still remain stiff! I barely use half the travel and I'm 200lbs. Lol. I may try reducing the balance chamber pressure but they probably need to be revalved for woods vs the stock mx valving.
