Hand held electric starter
« on: May 01, 2017, 06:43:35 AM »
Hey guys. Looking for some input. Looking for alternate ways to start my '85 KX500 SBK. My rear sets will not give me enough throw/clearance to kick start the bike normally. And even if I could, being in full leathers would not be fun attempting to do so.

I was looking at the KX500 facebook page last week and saw that some guy was starting his KX500 with a handheld electric starter. Guess a lot of juiced up race bikes are started this way? Thought this would be a great way to start the bike in the paddock. have any of you gone with this method? the motor has to spin counter-clockwise which had me thinking about how it would be possible to spin the flywheel nut with enough torque from the electric starter. has anyone run into any issues with this?

The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

It would be a great set up but I am on a budget and don't have the coin for that!

It's a 1 1/8" nut on a flywheel puller threaded in and you use a Pingel drag bike starter to spin it.

thanks Roost! that's what I was missing. makes sense using the flywheel puller.

Those pingel starters look legit!

Others are using the remote starter from RDZ. Eliminates using big batteries and a cart. These are actually quite nice too.

I was wondering how you were going to start your bike with the fairings and rear sets.  Do you think you will be able to start it with the kickstarter at all, or will you only be able to start it with the external starter?
Perhaps I have a dirt bike addiction?

I received an email yesterday that the Panthera Kx500 starters will be ready in about two weeks. I don't have a problem kicking mine but after long hot days I think it will be nice. My 500 had been left in the corner of garage collecting dust on trail ride days until I got Larry's decompression mod. Hoping this keeps me going 20 more years.

If I unbolted the rear sets (2 bolts), then I could kick start it but what a pain that would be every time I needed to. I thought about using a roll starter that spins the rear wheel but those are very costly ($700-800). thinking one of these electric hand held units are the way to go.

Looks like a beast! would be nice to have a handheld unit with the battery on it. $650 is a lot of coin though. the pingel was was about $200 cheaper. I could deal with some battery cables for that! LOL

Are you building your bike for the track only, or will it be tagged for street use?

It'll be track only. Would be fun to have it on the street but NY is a pain in the @ss. I don't think I would be able to get a title for it. Not to mention the cops would have a hay day with me anywhere I went.

SO, after thinking about it some more...I've decided to change direction to a roll starter. this would let me start several different bikes that way incase I have anything else in the future that would also need it.

Found this link that shows a pretty nice homemade one. have to scroll down about halfway thru the page. going to use a 6hp Warn starter motor.
