Aparent chain wear into my left case.
« on: April 22, 2017, 08:24:54 AM »
I have what looks like the back of the output shaft bearing peeking through my left case just behind the front sprocket at the top, on my 1993 Kx 500 engine.
What can I do with this?

Here is a guide to posting pictures using Photobucket, which is free.

If you have the pictures already loaded on another website, you can directly link to them using the insert image button as well.  Just open the pictures in a new page, copy the website address, and paste the link in between the brackets.

were you running a 13T front sprocket?...or an xtra wide chain?

I run a 14t up front.
Standard Pro Taper chain. No Oring or Xring for me.
I fear the prior owner ran wider chain.

That's not your bearing.
There is a steel insert right there.
If it does not leak it's no biggie.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Thank you for the info!
Should I discover a leak, can it be JB welded?
Also am I on the right track staying away from the
Oring/Xring chains?

I whittle mine down so I can run a x-ring  :-o

Lots of guys use jb weld...
I don't like it so I get mine tig welded.
But I wouldn't worry, I doubt it will leak.

If you just gotta use jb weld get the Kwikweld version

You can have that case fixed...I've had a couple done over the years. Just find a good welder...but like Sandblaster said...if it ain't leaking, I wouldn't make it a priority, unless you want to....other wise JB should band-aid it for a while

There are a few threads on here, with mixed answers/opinions about x-ring chains...but I myself won't run one.
Same with the 13T front, a few threads on them too...most of them suggest to not run one.

As I continue my research on this a see all of you guys input, I have come across numerous pics of small rectangles of what look to be that insert.
I see some with it showing in two or three locations.
This looks odd to me.
But, you all have helped me relax and given me some ideas to proceed with.
Thanks a lot. All of you!!

Sandblaster, did you just sand it down to the desired clearance?

Started with one worse then yours, then I used a porting tool to get it a bit closer then last I sanded with a fine flapper wheel.
