Gear Selector Problems

Howdy fellow KX nuts,

So I was out riding yesterday, and went to upshift to second after a pretty good day of riding, and had a very hard time getting the bike into second. The clutch action still worked fine, the gear selector lever had more of a range of motion than usual, and it would not really do anything. So, today I pulled the clutch cover off. Inside, I found a pin that comes off of the outside of the right side case, and that the claw looking device that actually selects the gears, appears to use to control its range of motion, had broken off. It is also the pin that the shifter return spring hits on. Has anyone had any experience with this? It appears relatively simple to repair if the broken peice of that pin comes out of that case without trashing the threads. (Lets pray for left handed drill bits working.) I have a fair amount of practice with removing broken bolts, so the act of changing that pin does not seem unrealistic. My bigger concern, is what happened to make this problem occur.

Thanks in advance for any insights that anyone has to share!
