'86 kx80 rebuild/ bore
« on: January 19, 2016, 11:51:50 PM »
Hey guys i have a 86 kx80 motor im using for a kx 60 project and im rebuilding it right now. I have the head and cylinder off right now. Bottom end is good, but piston and cylinder walls have some scoring. I guess i will need to bore it out. All i can find is 1mm over, is that enough for the cylinder walls to be restored? Is there any replating involved after the bore? Is there any coating? Its at stock 48mm bore and wiseco sells a 49mm piston and thats all the bigger that i can find .

all the plating companies sell/supply pistons these days that I'm aware of.
once you send them your cylinder, they'll be able to tell you how much they'll need to bore it out...if any at all.
If for some reason the damage is beyond what they can supply a piston for, they'll let you know...but be sure to let them know you want them to contact you if there's any problems.
Most plating companies have the ability to repair some pretty damaged cylinders these days.
Some even have a "cylinder exchange" deal...where you send them your damaged cylinder, and they'll send you a refurbished one for an "X" amount of dollars.
Not sure where you're located...but if you're near the east coast, then PowerSeal is a very good choice...if you're near the west coast, then Millenium Tech is a very good choice for platers.

Im in central PA so i was planning on sending it to Powerseal. They do bore for $50, but do i need plating in addition to that? The damage is pretty decent but its not really deep.

I'm pretty sure that year 80 had plating....I'd just call Powerseal this morning and talk to them, let them know what you got and need...and they'll tell you to send it in...
They're really great guys to deal with....they should be able to give a pretty good ballpark price over the phone too.
Ask them about their cylinder exchange option too.
