Looking for a KX 500 1991 bottom end
« on: December 26, 2015, 05:53:46 AM »
Found a very clapped out kx 500 on craiglist.

Due to the inclement weather, missed seeing a bowling ball sized whole at the bottom of the crankcase. (Yes, i'm a jack ass)

Trying to do a budget rebuild, and need a 1991 kx 500 bottom end.

Do I just scour ebay????

give Sandblaster a shout...
if he can't help, e-bay will be your next option, unless someone else here can help....just make sure you get good clear pics from sellers, and have them mic the bearing journals before making any commitments.
I see case halves on e-bay all the time...just don't rush into the 1st ones you see without verifying their condition with the seller.
Excuse me, ma'am...but you've got extremely nice legs!!!...what time do they open???                                                                                                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8tCgN3aryQ

Thanks Foxx but I'm out...
It's getting VERY hard to find good bottom ends.
Nearly everything we get is sold as being in good condition.
But, just as often we find they are ready for a complete overhaul.
And good parts are getting really hard to come by.
If you do find a seller that knows what they are looking at, they will likely know what a good crank, cases, and transmission are going for.
Watch eBay and pay with PayPal.
If you find damage that is not described in the ad then you will eventually be able to get all your money back.

I have had several cases with various types of holes welded up.  It would have to be pretty bad to just junk it.  Post a pic of the hole.

The savage (guy) I (rescued) bought this from was about 5'8 and close to 285 pounds, who dwells in one the the poorest neighborhoods in south east washington dc.

There was zero chance I was going back there to confront him about this 'minor' issue. (besides, i only gave away $500.00 for this)

I concluded, due to the previous caretaker doing burnouts (as evidenced by the rear tire) in combination of running the bike really lean, caused the rod to grenade through the crankcase, blowing out part of the top end to.

I didn't get any scrapnel, as I was unaware the whole bottom end was gone.

Just didn't want to have to put $1500+ dollars, into a $500.00 beater.

I was told that the motor was was locked up and all it needed was a bottom end.

With the exhaust on the bike, it covered up that area, as I only gave the bike a cursory look.

Just wanted to get it, load it up and get out of there as quickly as possible.

I missed the typical red flags when going to purchase a non running used bike.

1. Was given an address that was actually a few row houses down from his actual residence (this I understood).

2. We had corresponded via text message, only.

3. He had a 1 dated photo of the bike, when it allegedly was running, when I asked for a recent pic, he sent me a video of it from a distance.

4. When I arrived (at what I thought was his residence I tried to call him and it went straight to his voicemail)

I take full responsibility of being 'got' though.

you're not gonna wanna hear it...but either way you go if you decide to fix it up, you're looking at an easy $1500+ on the motor alone to do it without half assin it. All new bearings/seals, crank, cases, replate, top end kit, gasket kit...tac on several more hundred if it needs any tranny parts, such as gears/drum/shafts/forks....or if it needs any KIPS components.
it all depends on how far you wanna take it, and have it be reliable when you're done.

you can always part it out and get some money back.

If you decide to part it out I'll pay the shipping to get the cases here.
I have a cool display that I want to build.
