1990 KX250 water pump.
« on: August 15, 2015, 09:47:46 PM »
Hello

I have a 90 KX250 I am doing a complete rebuild on, the water pump shaft with the plastic gear needs replacing, I couldn't find a replacement but I got from a wrecker a 1997 shaft with the steel gear and cast alloy impeller, I think it may fit if I make a spacer to set the end float.

Has anyone done anything like this before?

Kawasaki don't have that part ? try the later part idea , or you want is the coolant to flow around , you could always get a copy of the plastic gear made out of a different material from a gear cutter unless the 97 gear is the same which I suppose it isn't and is the 97 impeller wider to  , you might be able to machine it to fit as well , you just have to go threw the options ,did you check the part numbers of other models to see if they use the same part?

I understand the 88 and 89 90 use the same 18 tooth gear and shaft, Kawasaki don't have any more stock, the 97 shaft and gear has 21 teeth but I got the crank drive gear to witch fitted my crank, the impeller is wider but seems to fit in the housing ok.

Getting a new gear cut was too expensive and its is molded onto the shaft.

I haven't had a chance to dummy it up and see how it fits yet, the other option was to turn up a new shaft and press the 1997 gear onto it as they are steel.

The shaft off the 91 is still available new, I have ordered one and will compare it to the 90 shaft.
