144 cc kit on '96 bike
« on: February 27, 2018, 08:01:34 AM »
Hi , first of all I want to greet everyone, I'm new on this forum. :-D
I've scrolled all the discussion, but can't find anything usefull so..
The question is: it's possible to fit last editions top end on a '96 engine?
Because the stock cilinder it's starting to crack everywhere (already welded one crack on the base stud hole, and now a crack on the exhaust lead to a seizure :x :x) plus the difficulty to find exauste valve spares is making me think about a drastic solution...
I'm from Italy, so here it's easy to find some good deal for athena components (about 100 euros difference between welding and nikasil + piston + gasket for the stock one and a brand new complete with cilinder, exhaust valve, piston, gaskets head big bore kit), but they only make the cylinder kit for the last model of KX 125, and I can't understand if it's possible to fit it on my engine.
I've seen that the reed valve output shaft from the crankcase its different, but does't seem to difficult to modify that...
My big concern is about the matching between the crankcase ports and the cilinder ports (water and mixture) and the connectig studs pattern.
Anybody tried to swap a '02-'07 cylinder on '93-'97 low end?
THX

Hi Ermax, welcome to the site.  I think the best people to answer your question are DoldGuy and KXDino.  Be patient, I'm sure they will log on and be able to help.

With out the 2 engines side by side i couldnt say , but i do know the power valves are very different , the old model is a pull rod the later turns , if it was me i would repair or replace the affected parts or get the later engine , then you might as well get the whole bike and have one for a spare . You know the old saying a pair and a spare.

THX...
I know that the valve scheme is really different, but the big bore kit comes wit all the required parts...
btw the problem is quite solved because after rectifing the barrel, what seem to be a crack in the exaust zone, was only a piece of melt piston...
I've also found probably the last brand new right exhaust valve in Italy  :-P
So if everything go well... the small KX will come back to life in a couple weeks  :-D :-D
