KX 250 or KX 250f for beginner
« on: June 14, 2015, 06:40:18 AM »
Hi everyone,
I am thinking of getting myself my first off-road bike for the main purpose of fun riding in the woods and maybe smallish jump. I will also sometime take it out on a MX track but not for racing just fun. Will maybe think of doing a bit of enduro later on. I am currently looking at the 2008 KX 250 and 2010 KX 250f and have no idea which one would be the best for me as a rider and what I want to use it for. I am fairly new to off-road but I am fairly skilled in on-road and I am capable of doing maintenance on the bike myself. I weigh about 165 lbs and I am about 5.9 ft tall. Hope to hear some opinions.
Thanks

Hi JEgelaar. Since no one else has replied, I thought I'd give it a shot. Don't have as much experience as most of these guys on the forum, but I have learned a few things. I too come from road background (mostly smaller bikes) having loved road bikes in my teenage years. Now I have seen the light, life is so much more fun now  :-P  :-)

It's kinda hard to compare the 250 2 stroke to a 250 four stroke. I think coming from road, you will get into the swing of things quickly on the 250F. I think it will be good for you because I don't think it will tire you out too much, but it still has a good amount of power and will be able to do what you need it to. In other words a good all round bike for track and trail whilst being a beginner to off road. If you had to compare the 250f, you'd basically compare it to a 125 2 stroke and the 450f to a 250 2 stroke. But they are all different bikes. It is also up to preference.

Also ask people you ride with or other people what bikes they ride and how they use them. Learn as much as you can because you will start to understand the differences. I recently bought a 99 KX250 that I am busy rebuilding for technical riding. I chose a 2 stroke because it has a lot of power but still lighter than a 450 4 stroke making it easier to maneuver over very tech terrain, but the weight save comes at a cost of fuel efficiency.

I hope this helps a little. Maybe someone else can add to what I have said.

Ed

I didn't answer because I'm biased.
Of course you should get a two stroke.
The 4 stroke is a more modern chassis.
Of course you should get a two stroke.
The 4 stroke would be easier to learn on.
Of course you should get a two stroke.
The 4 stroke will have parts available for a longer period of time.
Of course you should get a two stroke.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

For the sought of riding your doing get the 2010 250 f , you need to get some decent valve guides and seats for the head and change oil and filters plus a set of 22mm triple clamps would help the handling as for the kx250 05 to08 range of bikes it a mid to top powerplant with a nasty habit of stepping out the front wheel on loose flat corners , the good thing it all can be fixed , I have these bikes for years now and 250 2t is heavily modified as my son still races it sometimes , I will do a post on the mods soon as I want to help anyone with this model to save them time and money on what works . If you want a model that you don't want to work on much get a kx250 04 or a 03 .

thanks Umberto! I bought it a couple years ago for 700$ with low compression. But it had takasago rims, the gave me a brand new full FMF fatty and turbine core silencer still in packaging, a new piston and rings and set of tag triple trees and tag bars! I sent the piston and cylinder to millenium and had the crank seals and crank bearings done, i bought the graphics kit and boy is she fast compared to my 02 cr250! Love my kawi!
