Hi guys im completely new to the forums. Today a guy I work with said he had a bike for sale, he said he bought it from a kid who raced it and yada yada, im not much into motocross. Anyways he said he had very little info on it he dosent even know the year model. He is going to send me model numbers and such one of these days. Now heres the tricky part, it dosent run and the guy has it all broken down to rebuild but he "says" he dosent have time for it so he wants 125$. Now im not naive I know thats highway robbery. Theres either something bad wrong or he has no idea what he has. Should I go ahead and buy it and rebuild it myself or should I let it go and not look back? I LOVE working with engines and I specialise in diesel engine rebuilds. Ive always wanted a bike and id like something to get the fundamentals of the gears and safety and such. But I DO NOT want to start riding on the highway just yet. So my question would be, Should I get it?

First thing I'd do is run VIN on it to confirm it is not stolen.

Second thing I'd do is get some pics, upload to http://imgur.com then post here so we can see what you have and be better able to help you.

You can find a non-emergency number for your local police and ask them to run the VIN through the system. Just tell them that you are planning to buy a bike, and you want to make sure it's not stolen. If they say it's okay, then you can be reasonably sure it's not stolen. That is unless someone just stole it and the owner hasn't filed a police report. I bought a stolen one off of Craigslist, and that's what I do now before buying anything.

Last I knew the cops would not give out that information unless it is a business or they have the vehicle in hand so they can take it if it is stolen. Been a while since I tried that though.

In Oregon you can call the local PD and they will run the VIN and tell you if it has been reported stolen.
They will not give out the previous registered owners info.

Run the vin on a vin lookup site.  To see if anything comes up in records.

I actually ran my stolen one on a lookup site, and it didn't come up.  Of course I relied on that site when I was buying it.  My friend with the FBI said that the websites don't have access to the same lists the cops do.  I just hate to see anyone else get burned by those sites.

Yep that's why I always have the cops come out and run the check for me.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff actually opens up their parking lot for Craigslist transactions.  It keeps both parties safe, and you can get verification that the item is not stolen.  I have yet to use it, but it would be great for that "too good to be true" item.
