99 250 pipe on a 2003?
« on: December 02, 2014, 10:55:25 AM »
Hello I just came across a mint FMF pipe and silencer for my 2003 KX 250 the only issue is its for an 99. Does anyone have any idea what the difference is? Can I mount it up?

I believe you will find the mounting brackets to be off alignment since it's a different model.
I have read that the '99 and '00 are the same, and that supposedly in '01 they changed and would not fit the '99-'00...maybe someone else can verify this...maybe the exhaust port on the cylinder changed after '00, I don't know.

When I got my '00 in boxes/pieces...it had a '94 FMF fatty with it....I wasn't aware of this until it came time to install it after completely rebuilding it. The mounting brackets on the pipe were about 2" off from where the frame mounts were. The previous owner(15yo kid) had apparently had it strapped on by just the exhaust springs!, which explained why the eyelets for the springs on the cylinder were worn right through!.

Bottom line, you "could" modify it to fit providing the outlet on the cylinder isn't different and the stinger doesn't hit the shock body, then all you'd probably have to do is cut the mounting brackets off the pipe, and relocate and weld them back on so they line up with the frame mounts...but you'd be way better off to just find the correct pipe for your '03, and bolt it up and ride issue free.

FMF 97-00,
01-02,
03
I'm not saying it can't be done, just that you are separated by 2 model groups.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Can I mount it up?

and unless you can get this set-up for next to nothing...I just don't see it being worth the time, money and effort to fit it, when there's still a chance it might not perform as well as it could/should, since it's a different design...(kind of a gamble that could go either way).

that's why I suggest finding the "correct" pipe, and being issue free.

no, it's a "works" pipe, bare metal.

I have a 99 KX250 that I bolted on a 04 KX250 pipe and silencer to. Had to futz some and cut off one of the mounting tabs for the silencer but the pipe fits really good now. Here's a thread with pics I made on this swap. Seems it should work in reverse too.

http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/1110284-03-04-kx250-pipe-fits-99-02-03-07-kx250-silencer-fits-99-02-pics-inside/?hl=%2B2004+%2Bpipe#entry11987858

You'll notice that the 99 pipe fits tighter to the frame than the 04 so you'd prolly need the 99 pipe hanger to mount it closer to your 03 frame. For my setup the 04 pushed further away from the frame so I used a Honda pipe hanger.

did you notice any performance differences...such as loss or gains anywhere in the power delivery?...or was it about the same as the '04 pipe?

Low end on the 99 is still spectacular but it seemed to add better top end pull. Previously it sort of gradually ran down in top end but now keeps building up albeit not arm-yanking style. I didn't have alot of open space to fully ascertain the difference. I rode it on slow trails with logging road connectors in-between.

I bought the bike for $500 and the exhaust was fairly shagged. Picked up the 04 exhaust for $40 total. Had to try it.  :-)

The pipe does fit but it is tight and the silencer does not fit at all. I could prob make it work but I am not sure that it will be worth it.

are you running a different silencer than shrubitup?
I still have my OEM silencer from my '04 if you're interested...it only has a couple hours of use on it.
