What's the purpose of the plastic round holder in the float bowl?

Hi All,

Mine doesn't stay on that brass piece anymore. It's loose...would that cause any problems?

Not sure what the purpose of that is?

Also, is that the correct orientation looking from the bottom of the carb?

Hey Dinky.. Not entirely sure of that piece in the picture cuz I'm using a Keihin 38 quad vent carb which doesn't use it. My wifes XR100 uses something similar to dampen or keep the fuel in the bowl from splashing around.

I did have the hard start backfire problem a while back after a bout with bad ethanol blend fuel and lowering the needle 1 notch. It seems to be solved after turning the pilot (air) screw in to richen the fuel flow.

I started at 1-3/4 turns open and settled at 1 full turn out. The popping has stopped and it starts easier.

Never thought about turning the pilot in  I always started with 1.5 turns out.....something to try though.

 Can't promise results but it's easy to try. Don't be shy with it, I started at 3/4 turn out but it idled rich so I went to 1 turn.
 
 I didn't get to go riding last weekend to check mileage so maybe this weekend. Sat & Sun sposed to be around 40 deg.
