I am starting this thread because of the lack of info iI have ran into on correctly setting up kips valves.  The bike I am currently working on is 98 k5 . It had good compression but still did not want to produce the legendary power that I had experianced on other k5s. From what I could tell the KIPS was not installed properly and the drums were worn so that the alignment dots were not all visible. What I'm looking for is a fool proof method of knowing my KIPS are installed correctly.
I have read http://www.hallbergs.net/kx500/#33 . It is a good top end guide but there is not enough info on it for what I need. I currently have my head apart so if we need pictures of anything let me know

Pictures of the valves outside of the head on the sides I think they should go in

Here are some pictures of the kips assembled the way i think is correct with the valves closed all the way so the ports are exposed

Remember head is upside down so right is left and left is right

looks like the valves are not closing, Try removing the allen stop stud {kipps bolt mod} to see if they close futher
they look fine on the opened position
maybe somone hase already modded the kipps bolt

If the bolt were longer then the port would be closed all the way

then u need the kipps bolt mod ,a longer bolt {about 3mm]

I'm not really worried about the kips mod at the moment I'm just trying to figure out if my kips is setup correctly

IF the valves are correct in the OPENED position[which they look to be} they should be fine 
The gap in the CLOSED position is what u need to fix with a longer kipps bolt  [mod]
The overclosing valve was kawasaki idea of a decompressor, {bleeding some compression from the higher sub exhaust port}

i presume u have lined up the timing marks on valve and rod, {think it needs to be done with kipps bolt out}

Kips installation aside... It wouldn't hurt to sharpen your transfers, bridges, and clean up the floor ports and transfer ports....
A Dremel and some time will do wonderful things....  8-)
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

This is just my backup head I have the actual head I run on its way back from getting replated

Possibly part of my future boost control and engine management setup
