« on: April 03, 2003, 05:09:23 AM »
what are the differences and which is more reliable? are the power outputs close or is there a huge gap. i have been wating a new kx engine for a cart progect but i came across a 89 model at a great price. is it too far outdated to be worth while?

I don't know what all the differences are but I can tell you the basic 250 engine is the same from 1993-2002.  You could probably get similar peak power out of any water cooled 250 but the later model ones should make a little more. Also parts avaiability, upgrades, and reliability would probably be better on something a little newer than a 89. I'd hold out for at least a 93 or newer if it was me.

The '03 engine is completely new. Compared to one from 89, there is probably only a 5-8 hp difference in power, so a pipe and some minor port-matching is probably all that youd want.  If you want something long term, get the newer engine. Youll have an easier time getting parts for it, as your local dealer will probably have what you need in stock.
