Kx 450 2014 1 hour failure today
« on: July 18, 2014, 11:23:42 PM »
Just bought a 2014 kx450 just run in
Acted funny before tabletop then locked up
I started it rode cautiously back to main pits and then
Started making a squealing noise then it started overheating
I turned it straight off and pushed it back
Pretty embarrassing for a brand new bike

Just sold my crf 450 13 never a problem

Has anyone else had this problem?
I want to give bike back to dealer.

Man that's a nightmare story.
Take it back to the dealer... NOW!
Sorry to hear it.

How many hours? Have you serviced it? All fluids up? What did the dealer do to it during assembly? If it is manufacture defect kawasaki will stand behind it. Could happen with any brand,,,Kawasaki is a good choice.

These kx450 are pretty reliable , the only thing I heard was a owner put a oil filter back to front and seized it , but took about a hour to do it. if it a fault with the bike ,kawi should come to the party, I recall once that Honda allow 1 in every 1000 machines to be a lemon, and what I see crf break more than any other brand ,having 2 separate oil compartments ,were people forget to change oil, and the d**n valves that would wear out in no time especially if the air filter was neglected as well as the to light of a transmission that would slip in no time at all, gears to weak ,they upgraded these parts as well because they new there was a problem, all bikes have troubles ,I sure there a good reason behind this failure.

Owning a bike salvage company I have a unique perspective on 4T's,
I get way more CRF450's and CRF250's then any others.
Next I get a fair amount of Yamaha's.
Then Suzuki's.
It's then a toss up between KTM's and Kawasaki's but I get very few of either.
This could be due to the area I live in as I don't know which of these bikes are sold the most.
I sure hope you get taken care of.

Run in full tank if fuel , dropped oil , put filter in
Went out first lap out  started to cut out before table top
Then just turned off
I then restarted are rode back slowly to pits
Stop at pits it started overheating and making squealing noise

Filter is correct

It was making funny noises when I was running it in.
I've come straight off 6 years with a honda.
But the guys down my local track say kawasakis are noisy.

I found on the 14 that depending on the conditions like temp and altitude affect the mapping.  The chips that come with them only help a little.  I found on the last one I worked on that it was running lean, it ran fine for the first ride and then after that started running weak in the top and overheated.  He brought it over to me and I pulled the plug and it was way lean, at about an hour on the bike.  Did looking and found they needed a remap to make it run right.  Your does not sound like an isolated case.  Let us know what the dealership says.

If it blew up with so little hours I'm sure Kawi will stand behind it. I heard of a 12 that put the rod through the cases but with any brand your going to have a percentage of failures, unfortunately yours may one of them. I had a 500 that the  casing was not cleared out on the discharge of the water pump, bike was still running after several weeks, I asked for a complete new motor, they gave me a complete new bike, sure it depends on the relationship you have with the dealer. I currently own 4, 450's and have bought and sold maybe 6 more with never a problem with the bike. as Alward says they are lean from the git go, maybe  some emissions thing or bad gas, not sure but you need the tool to richen them up, it also gets rid of the popping on decel.

the amount of hondas you get most likely has nothing to do with there reliability. look up the sales on honda VS all other dirt bike manufacturers. even when you go to the track (at least out here) theres 50%+ honda. Different story at the desert races, all orange.

The only people that are racing hondas in the desert here are the business owners, easier to write off a $9,000 honda "generator" for the shop then a KTM scooter.

I like Hondas , they give us plenty of work ,lots of head jobs and bottom ends ,crf ,s and there slow to the first corner especially in sand it bad when you see a old kx125 08 drag a crf250 14 up a sandy straight, that should not happen one bike twice as big?
