New Finnish KX500 rider -Now with pictures-
« on: April 28, 2014, 07:35:42 AM »
Hello you all here in this forum!!
I`m a newbie with Kawasakis, the bikes that I have owned now and before are all Honda`s, Yamaha`s and Husqvarna`s. I just bought a 1990 KX500 and I´m going to rebuild it completely. The bike is not in so good shape but everything is working, the carburation is terrible rich, there is some play on the crankshaft bearings... It has a Pro Circuit pipe, Boyesen reeds otherwise is stock.

Best regards, Timo

That`s where it all started:

Complete stripdown:

Frame sandblasted and powdercoated:

Swingarm painted and fitted to frame with all new bearing set:

Frame, suspension and wheels:

New Goldspeed rims, stainless spokes and original hubs powdercoated, all new bearings:

Less engine:

Engine overhaul, all new bearings, con rod, Wössner piston and cylinder porting:

Engine fitted to frame with new silicone hoses and new radiators:

Almost ready:

Nearly finished, missing some small parts:

This has been an interesting job. All bearings (frame and engine) plastics, radiators, seat foam and cover, rims, spokes, hoses, graphics, brake discs and hoses, handlebars, controls, wires, bolts, tyres, air filter, FMF Gnarly desert exhaust pipe and powercore 2 silencer..... are new. Suspension is set up by a specialist, cylinder is ported... still waiting new float valve and reed spacer. After that, I hope plenty of fun riding. 8-)

the place that makes those swing arm decals, factory efx, are a half hour down the highway from me in New Bedford...they make all kinds of cool graphics and designs.

I like to do as much as possible by myself but suspension things I`ll leave for a specialist. I do the engine rebuilds, porting, sand blasting etc. But, sorry, no pictures about the porting job although there is no secrets, some polishing, sharpening, the usual things. There was a lot of work with the cylinder because of not so good cylinder sleeve, the transfer ports were so poorly in their correct place :x I also adjusted the KIPS valve with correct length bolt so that the ports are closed when idle. Now I`m waiting the reed spacer from Moose Racing and a new float valve for the carb.

Yes I do, someone has fitted a sleeve to this barrel and the ports of the sleeve were not correctly positioned to the alloy cylinder casting and that needed a lot of attention and porting job.  :-o

Nice that this is a good forum to get new members from Finland.
I, unfortunately, I have had to give up my own KX500.
Nothing lasts as its own time.
Something is still left. I'll go even more in this forum on a daily basis.

TimoR, continue to hold our flag high.
