Kx500 gear change mechanism
« on: December 22, 2013, 03:54:36 AM »
I'm looking for a light weight aluminum after market gear shift lever for my 1990 kx500.   There are plenty available on-line, the only problem is, the lever I get, the spline is too large.

I did some checking, and the part number changed in 1994

My part num from 1990 was 13156-1240; this changed in 1994 and all years forward to 13156-1347

So my question is, where the heck can I get a lever after market that will reliably fit?   Undoubtedly, owners with later models have had this problem, no?  The shift spline on older models is smaller.

87-93 shift shaft and lever are the same. (Small spline)
94-04 shift shaft and lever are the same. (Large spline)
There are no new after market levers that I am aware of for the smaller spline but you can always replace the shift shaft in your engine with a newer shaft.
Then you have available a number of shift levers.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

I have a 1993 KX 500, and have been having trouble finding a shift lever for it ( I guess that I have the small spline gear on my lever change shift shaft ).

Do I have to update any other parts besides the seal in order to update my engine?

Thanks

Mark

If you want a used OEM lever I have two;

http://www.ebay.com/itm/KX500-KAWASAKI-1993-LOT-A-KX-500-93-SHIFT-LEVER-/371045649463?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item56640b4c37

If you want to update your shift shaft to the larger spline, just buy the 94 and newer shift shaft, install it, and your good to go.
You won't need a bigger seal, but it wouldn't hurt to put in a new one  :-D

I agree with sandblaster. I had the same issues with my 93 engine. Buy a later model shifter shaft and call it good. You have no chance of finding a 11mm spline aftermarket shifter. Now that I changed mine, it works with later model kx250/450's when in a pinch at a ride with a buster shifter.
