Does everyone have a title for thier bike? Registration? Insurance?

Hi All,

The bike I have, 87 KX250 was given to me but without a title.

I drew up a bill of sale but that's it.

I want to eventually register and insure it.

How do I get a title.....Or what's the downfall of having one?

No downfall, most  dirtbikes from most states did not come with one.  You can file for lost title and title it.  Not usually a problem.  Insurance is good in case it is stolen or end up at the bottom of a lake.

I Have titles and reg. for most of my toys. My son bought a yz125 and was told title was in colorado with the sellers father, long story short never got it ..DMV in El Cajon, CA told me when registering my other bike to just bring in generic bill of sale and it would be all good. Cannot  be sure have not been back to do it!!!  As far as insurance I live in the sticks, have big dogs and bigger guns so not to worried bout it

Colorado does not title dirt bikes, just bought one from there and thought it was odd, so I called their DMV, sure enough no title. In the late 90's MT did not title dirt bikes either so you come across some with out titles. the CO bike I bought I took the bill of sale and an application for title, had a trooper verify the vin number and 3 weeks later I got a title

When you buy a brand new Dirt bike, ATV, or UTV, in Oregon, they do not give you a title unless you ask for one.
They will give you a Certificate of Origin.
You can have them get you a title but you pay extra for it.
Because Oregon does not require a title most guys opt to not get one.
However, other states do require a title.
If your state does not require a title then the only downfall to not having one is resale.
Some guys freak out when there is no title.
Titles also make proof of ownership easier if the bike is ever stolen.

In Oklahoma no titles for OHV (off highway vehicles) until 2005 from then on all OHV's have an OHV title.
2004 and earlier we had to pay sales tax at 8.7%. Now an excise tax is paid at 3.9%.
Most people bought the OHV's out of state before '05 because of the high sales tax on OHV's.
A notarized bill of sale is all you need to get a OHV title for pre 2005 OHV's.
One time cost no downside to that.  Better for the cops to find your bike after theft.
If you street tag a bike in Okla. all you technically need is an odometer to get the title.
It's best if it is fully street legal but I got my KX500 street title with the bike, for them
to record the VIN. number and my Vapor speedo/odometer new in the box.
Down side to street tag on a KX500.........
Pay for a tag and liability insurance each year. Too easy to get tickets.

Pre '05 if your bill of sale is from out of state you have to comply with that states
rules.  If it had a title you have to have it to title it in Okla.

Without the MSO or Certificate of Origin and having it filled out as you as the original owner not with a bunch of previous owners on it you wont have any luck getting it registered in NJ. NJ is VERY difficult on titling offroad bikes. Believe me I know, Im from NJ. You may want to try out of state. Any relatives out of state?

So I called NJDMV they said NJ does not title dirt bikes. Just registration and insurance. My issue is, in other to register, I need to prove I'm the owner.

DMV mentioned something about going to get a court bond where a judge will determine whether on not I can be the owner. Once that's done, the paperwork is sent to DMV and a registration is issued.

Problem is that no one can tell me what court I have to go to...surprise surprise.

One thing I do not about the govt. federal or state they can be bought..The other problem is how much I'm willing to pay.

I should get the paperwork next week.

The bike was given to me, so I'm not out any money...

NJ is the worst. If you go to three different dmv's you get three different answers. Your best bet is to look for an out of state frame and title making sure that the title doesn't say ohv anywhere.

or do you have a relative in another state, title it there then when you get the title bring it to NJ and transfer it.

I was thinking on selling it to my dad who lives in PA, but I've read that it's the same procedure there to obtain a COO/Title.

I could be wrong.

I'll see what the paperwork/funds I need.
