Kick starter problems?
« on: March 02, 2014, 01:16:05 PM »
Kick starter will not always engage when engine is cold. If I lean the bike to the right and pull slightly on the kick start shaft it will usually engage. Once the bike starts and warms up a little no problems after that. Kick starter engages every time. Pulled the side case off and didn't see anything obvious. Wondering if it's oil related as I just started using Maxima 85Wt or just some coincidental problem? Anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance!

Hey Pete...
Assuming the gears are all good I'd probably replace the spring 92081-097.
I'd also make sure that the snap ring and washers were all good..
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

I had the exact same problem with my 500 when I bought it...once it was warmed up, it was fine.
It was the ratchet spring that was the problem...they're a fine wire spring and get weak over time.
Looks like Sandblaster has given the correct part #...and they're under $10.
Excuse me, ma'am...but you've got extremely nice legs!!!...what time do they open???                                                                                                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8tCgN3aryQ

yeah 4 times is a bit for a K5....other than doing a complete rebuild, I've never had to take mine off...knock on wood

as i replaced the complete kickstart-assembly in my 86-engine i added a wascher to the spring for more compression to the ratchet...
