Rear caliper holder assembly
« on: January 18, 2014, 10:01:13 AM »
 Hi Ya. Been in the process of swaping out my 04 500 into a 96 frame I picked up a while ago. The 04  frame was showing signs of wear underneath the cradle tubes with holes starting to appear. The 96 frame is a minter and looks as though it has had very little use. All threads are good, no dings or dents. Also decided on using the 96 swingarm which I got as well. The 04 needle rollers are seized fairly solid in there and its looking a little tatty, where as the 96 is quite good. Re- bearinged everything on it with AllBalls stuff. All good.

 Then I come to the rear caliper. Seems the carrier or holder is quite different between the two. The "T" section of alloy the holder slides on is welded at a different hieght on the inside of the swing arm on the 04. So I could remove the T slidey alloy bit and re-weld it where it needs to go or just get the correct holder to fit, which would be easier.

 Went to the online parts fische site and looked. The part number is the same for both the 96 and the 04 (140-79) and the look identical. Hmmm.

 Any one know when the change occured or if there is a crossover between ther 125/250/500 ?

  Cheers !

96-04 kx500 rear brake caliper holder and swing arm are the same.
So, either your frame is older then you think or, it's been retrofitted with a earlier swing arm and brake carrier.
Been through this one a while back...
If you have a US bike check your 10th digit of your VIN and see if it's on the chart.
1989 = K
1990 = L
1991 = M
1992 = N
1993 = P
1994 = R
1995 = S
1996 = T
1997 = V
1998 = W
1999 = X
2000 = Y
2001 = 1
2002 = 2
2003 = 3
2004 = 4
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

 Hmmm. My frame is an odball with very different numbers than other countries. But I did find out that it was destined for the NZ market and arrive as a 96 bike. Did also read somewhere that the 95 96 changed the brake style slightly. The later one is a more refined and better engineered.

 No matter, I'm going to remove the 04 stay and re-weld it tothe 96 arm. Problem sussed.

 What is a little concerning is that every site I've visited lists the part the same from E1- E16 ! Same number and same looking part.
