suspension questions 04 kx250
« on: June 30, 2013, 02:00:24 PM »
I just bought the bike and noticed it seemed rather low as if the suspension was lowered. I asked the previous owner but he said he never changed a thing since he had it.  I set it next to a newer 450 and the bike is like a low rider!!
I ordered new fork guards and they do not fit...so that tells me I don't have the original forks. However, the rear end is low too. Could someone measure their forks and shock length on an 04 kx250?? I have a feeling I have incorrect suspension on my bike.
If that's the case, what 4 stroke suspension is a direct bolt on?

Before you get too far into this, verify your year.
If your in the USA look at the 10th character of your VIN.
If you have a 04 then the 10th digit should be a 4.
If it is anything else let us know.
Do you have any pics of the bike?
With the bike sitting upright, how high is the back part of the seat?
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

If the fork has a bent inner tube, it could keep it from returning to full length. But that would not explain the rear being lower.

a previous owner may have had it lowered for a short rider, it is common for the flattrackers to lower the suspension. A friend just had his CRF450 suspension lowered. I would guess you could get un-lower it

The rear shock could be internally lowered. However the fork lugs on the forks are different than the 04. Because the original 04 fork guards won't bolt up

okay so I finally confirmed that I have the WRONG forks and shock on my bike. don't know how/why/who...but they are not correct. Ive found plenty of 2004 kx250 forks for sale but also found a lot of 2004 kx250f forks cheaper. I know the newer 250f ones use different clamps/stem/ yada yada. but who knows if the same year forks will interchange???
I have a line on a 125 shock that is the same.. ill be revalving/respring anyways.

As far as i know the 04 kx250f use kyb,so should fit,as kyb on kx,s usually use the same size fork where they bolt on the clamps.I know the kx45013 share the same size forks were the clamps go as a kx 250 01 forks which indicates most kyb should swap over.Late model kx250f use showa forks, could be 06 onwards ?The top of the showa forks, were the top clamp bolt on are usually slightly smaller ,but could be made to fit also ,as i am sure some of the guys on this site have done?

You will need to change triple clamps and forks. I put 05 forks on an 03 125. Steering stops will be your only issue, but easily remedied.

www.allballsracing.com

All Balls has a free service on its website that finds fork conversion bearings for you based on the year and model of your bike.

Depending on what forks (and matching triple clamps) you end up using, you may have to modify your steering stops, but the All Balls conversion information can at least give you a starting point.

It's my understanding that the '05-'07 KX250 two-stroke had really good forks, so that might be something to search for on eBay, or see if Sandblaster has some in stock at OEM Cycle. They're different from the '04-'05 KX250F/ '04-'06 RMZ250 forks.
