FL Title Street Legal
« on: October 05, 2013, 03:02:35 AM »
So I'm not trying to make my bike a motard but just wanted to get it street legal. So the problem is I live in Florida and I've heard the DMV gives people a hard time who try to do this to off-road bikes. I bought my bike nearly a year and a half ago and I received a bill of sale but no title. Now the frame is a 1989 and from what I've been reading the DMV didn't keep track of off-road stuff until 2002. I haven't made the trip to DMV office yet, and was just wondering if any one knew exactly how this will play out and maybe give me some advice on what to do. Thanks Gage

I just used my own set up from different lights from walmart, (55w. headlight, and 3 led bars for tail/brake lights, then stuffed a battery under the seat)

No that's not what I mean.. I'm not worried about lights, horns etc. That shouldn't be too hard. I'm worried about them turning me away from the DMV because it's a off-road vehicle. Because supposedly you can't make those street legal in FL. I could have the lights, horn etc and still be turned away.
I guess what I'm asking is if I don't have a title for it now, and if they apparently don't keep records of dirt bike titles until 2002. Could I some how sneak it through there as a motorcycle title, vintage or something else? I mean if I give them the frame vin# will they know it's off-road and say no you cant plate it? I don't think the bike's even gotta be there for them to plate it. I just didn't wanna go down there get a title saying off-road and be screwed or try something that won't work and have them remember my face. Just looking for info, Thanks Gage

Well here in colorado I have to make an appointment with the Colorado state patrol.  And have them inspect the bike to make sure I have DOT tires and all that jazz, so if you don't want them to see your face, then just call Florida state patrol, and see if they inspect dirt bikes for possible plating.  if they will, then just bring the bike to them have them fill out the correct paperwork.  Hope that helps better.  Also if they do inspect it have the DMV use the date on the paper from the state patrol, not the bill of sale (penalty fees) that's the way I can get a title. (Well here there penalty fees)

But I can't go anywhere with it the state patrol looking at my bike here

I'd get a plated frame either from Florida or another state.
Here's some interesting reading:
