my soninlaws family uses cummins.diesel power did an arcticle on one of his cousins trucks two years ago.from listening to those guys, my next truck will be a 97 or 98 12 valve.5 speed manual, they ere 100% mechanical 0 electronics.those years have the most desireable pumps according to my soninlaw.30 + mpg and over 1k ftlbs tourque , and be able to run on almost any type of oil [you might have to do a little of your own refining] sounds like the ticket for me :-)

While I the the 98 dodge had a pretty good motor the body still left something to be desired. 30 mpg sound like a pretty big stretch and 1000 ft lbs torque, you would have to jack them up pretty far to get that and then the mpg go away, they were somewhere around 700 ft bs stock.

I seriously considered a Dodge and a Chev in 08, i was trading a 05 Ford, Chev wouldnt give me anything for trade and when I went to Dodge I couldnt find a salesman, which I know is hard to believe, so I went next door and bought another ford, which was a joke, I couldn't pass anythinng and especialy a fuel station, so don't buy an 08-10 ford 6.4. the new ford with the 6.7 is a fabulous truck, great power and tranny, I can get an honest 19mpg at 75-80 mph and I get 9-11 pulling a 41' toy hauler. If I was looking for an older truck it would be a 7.3 withthe 5 speed, great truck although I never had any of the tranny problems others had even with the automatic.

I love the older 12 valve dodges.  I've driven many of the newer ones that my company has and all I have to say is this.........They are cheaper than ford and chevy because they cut costs everywhere else like on interior quality.  Even though the engine might last over 200,000 miles the body and interior only lasts about 50,000...hahahaha.  I broke one recently becuase it was winter time and I started her up so she could idle for 5 minutes to warm up.......the exhaust filter got clogged while idling and it had to be replaced...not cheap.....you cant idle a diesel, thats like a total oxymoron.........When test driving brand new dually's from chevy ford and dodge I noticed that the dodge was noticably down on power compared to the others.....the dodge also had the smallest drivetrain components for example, the driveshaft on the chevy and ford are the size of telephone poles, the dodge has a driveshaft that looks like it came out of a car.......Now before everyone gets all butthurt let me say that I am not one of those truck 1 vs. truck 2 vs. truck 3 guy......I have driven and towed with every manufacture of truck and I can tell you that I hate the 6.0l powerstroke FORD, I hate the old 6.2l diesel CHEVY, and I hate all the newer BLUTECH Cummins DODGE trucks........

I think that the Blue Oval, Bowtie, Ram battles that people have all the time are kinda amusing though........

the 30 mpg and 1kft lbs has already been done by diesel power magazine. :-) i agree USMC the newer dodges have their problems.my soninlaw has on 04 with 600k on it and he just bought a 96 two wheel drive 3/4 ,to get the better gas mileage.for the interior problems you could always do the conversion. pick your favorite body and swap the cummins in. there are lots of kits out there for it. i am driving an 05 suburban Z71.that i love. [chevy guy at heart]if i still have it when the motor or tranny pukes, i will seriously look at doing the cummins swap :-D

just talked to POPS about the 7.3

(he ran one of the largest fleets (school) this side of the mississippi).          they had many 7.3's in their buss's.      as did all the other local VERY LARGE fleets.

needless to say.   he gave a huge thumbs up to the motor.  had many ABUSED school buss's with over 350,000 miles on em.   without touching the motor.

only other he has done that to is the cummins in the doge's (he ran many of those also in buss's)

the only thing is those wheels.    PUKE..

anyone know where I can find a set of these?  (with good rubber).    Im sure some "bro" out there is willing to trade.I am. and always been a OEM wheel guy..

That looks like a real nice truck, love the crew cab. I have bought brand new wheels and tires from Barber bros. Ford in Morgan UT, $300 for all four wheels, brand new tires center cap and lug nuts. 4 of my buddies also bought sets, evidently in UT they like jacked trucks and big tires, so the stockers are plentiful, or at least were. I ran my winter tires on them, and hyad added the tire pressure sensor, unfortunately on my 11 the tire pressure sensor doesn't work, but I check pressure anyway so no issue.

first year of the Blutec engine (emissions crap) that came with exhaust filters and crap......slightly underpowered when compared to earlier years and you cant idle them because you could possibly clog the exhaust filter.........My old company had to pay out the @$$ when they had to replace one of those filters.......

I would say stick to the 2006 and earlier trucks........Just my opinion since I drove many of the dodge trucks my company had both with and without the bluetec version.
