88 kx5 engine in 93 chassis
« on: September 17, 2013, 04:32:17 PM »
Ive got a 1993 kx5 that is a great bike but is having some tranny probs (long story). Im gonna pull the engine out to fix my problem soon here. I have a 1988 spare parts bike (bought one year too early. oops!). But either way can I stuff the 88 engine in the 93 without mods like drilling holes larger or anything. I want to put the 93 engine back in it so modding wont work.
Thanks for you assistance. Btw before i recieve a verbal lashing I did use the search function. I came up with a lot of info but its the little things like the swingarm to engine pivot shaft, and the like that im just not sure about. I figured someone here has already done something similar.

88-04 All use the same swing arm pin..

The engine mounts have different part numbers but modding a set of mounts would be easy, cheap, and you could always buy another set...
My guess is they will swap with no problems...
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

the 88-engine use 8mm motorbolts the 89-2004 10mm motorbolts ...  you have no luck without drilling the holes in the older engine for the newer frame... or you have to made some little bushings for the frame-holes, that you can use the 8mm bolts too...  :-)

why dont you put the 88-trannie in the 93-engine???  only the second gear is diferent between both trannies

you have many options that will work...

Thanks for the help guys. I think I like the bushing idea with the 8mm bolts. That way I can slap the original engine right back in. I figured I could swap the tranny from one to the other but id like to keep both engines whole and have a spare. I appreciate the info as I couldnt quite figure out if it would be a fairly easy swap or not.
  Thanks again.
