86' Motor w/o power valve recommended?
« on: July 15, 2013, 10:10:43 PM »
Hi, I want to buy a KX 500 engine and its '86 or '87 without power valve. In my country its very hard to find any KX500.
So what can you tell me about that engine year? Durability? Parts? Power?
Would you buy one or should I absolute wait for a 88-03 engine?

Thanks alot.

hi... your nickname sounds, like you´re from bavaria, germany..

kx500 engines: 83-84 kx500 A1, A2---aircooled ,
                     85 kx500 B1---first watercooled ,
                     86-88 kx500 B2, C1, D1 ---the 3. engine-generation and in 86 the first powervalve came in ,
                     89- 2004 kx500 E1- E16---the 4. engine-generation with the smaller cylinder and the newer powervalve.

you could compare the parts and diferent years here  : www.cmsnl.com

Contrary to popular belief the 86-88 power valves do show up on ebay fairly often.
Your best bet is buying a used cylinder with them still inside.(theres a few on ebay right now)
You can't buy them new from dealers anymore as they have been discontinued.
Nothing wrong with the early motors except the parts supply is limited.
Power valves, cdi's and kickstarts are the hardest parts to track down.

Hello, yes I'm from Germany (not baveria ;)

The seller does not have large tech knowledge but he told me that his engine has NO power valve but is water cooled. So it must be the 85'?
I can not say it exactly cause it is in a 96' frame.

Whatever. What do you say about 85 engine? Is the newer one better at all?

Can you see what year it is? No KIPS Logo = 1985?

Ah, another problem: The 4th gear get out at load. It needs repair. I found a used transmission complete for about 150$ from 92 model. Do that match to this one?

Okay, I thought it.
What can you say about it? Parts? Power? Durability? (or is it same as 86?)
I don't know. Would you but it?

And my own quote :)

yep 85 engine...

and i think i know this bike it was last year offered on ebay-germany by mx-bude.de. 94-97 chassis with this ´85 engine and an exhaust, that looks like a250- aftermarket-pipe...

i´ve also had the 4.gear problem and a complete 1990 transmission in my ´86-engine  you have to bring the gears on the old shafts, (if they are not too worn out)the newer shafts dont match to the k5 engine cases before 88!  you need all clips and washer locks and replace the old ones...you also need a good used or new shiftfork for 4.-5. gear...
clips waschers and schiftforks are still available    and dont matter of the changed 2.gear that came in 89.  it works well in my 86-engine

in my case the clips were broke and found it everywhere in the gearbox . in cause of this the shiftfork and shifting gears were damaged ...
