kx 500 1987
« on: June 18, 2013, 06:07:13 AM »
i have brought a 1987 kx500 n its a basket case, i am sending the engine off for a total rebuild top n bottom, do i keep the steel frame n refurbish it or go down the ally frame road ? if i go down the ally road then which year n model would be suited for my 87 engine ?
if i keep the steel frame then i will need the rear bolt on section of the frame coz mine as been hacked at and the top of the rear shock frame as been welded :( many thanks

Hello and welcome to the site.
What kind of riding will you be doing?
Are you having your engine built back to stock or are you modifying it?
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

here is a pic that will answer your question... my 87 kx250 with the 41mm usd-fork .  you could also use the blue 43mm fork.
the steering-bearings are the same from 1983- 1991

the rear wheels fit ´86- 2002 models. in ´89 came the newer brakes. at the moment i use a ´93 rear wheel of my ´93 kx500sf, cause i have many ´19 tyres and still dont found the right 18 tyre that i´m looking for .

i´m not sure if the 88-2004 kx500 subframe will fit to the ´87 , but i think it could solve the problem i case you dont find an 87 subframe.
86-2004 gearbox is all similar, ther were only changes in 88 came a diferent input shaft with the newer clutch. in 89 an faster second gear. all 89-2004 transmission parts are still available in new . you could also loking for good used parts, if you want to safe money.

:-D... thats why we all are here for... 8-)
this site was a real great help with my k5-projekt.

i builded my kx500sf from quite nothing started with a ´93 250 frame and bought all parts on ebay that could fit in any way and after 2 years, is it finished but with some carb-jetting -problems in the moment. all i need is a little bit more time to ride and testing. ...i love this bear power since i rode it the first time in november last year...

before i started the build, i had only a great knowledge for 250´s  and here is is nobody around me that could help me, cause to less kx500 where sold here in germany over the years. in 2003 the last year for the big kx in europe were only 8 bikes in whole europe sold .
... if you always keep your eyes and ears open, you could learn new things every day...  8-)

Thank you motopunk :) ..... I sold my Rmz 450 09 to fund this 1987 basket case, I send the engine off this weekend for a total rebuild top to bottom by a bloke who only works on kx's for a full rebuild including portin n polishin, piston, clutch, bearings, seals the list is endless :( but I see a light at the end of the tunnel and my vision for a kx5 will be worthy of a magazine feature :) ...... My old forks are gettin refurbished even tho im puttin a kx250 upside downers on and Im buyin a new rear shock with all new swing arm bushes and the bike will be rolin on warp9 wheels :) (anodised green of course :) .... I will post a few pictures up once I have the basic rollin chassis together
