not shifting into 5th?

I have an 07 kx250 if shifts smooth through every gear and screams, except for 5th, why would this be happening?

I lift the shifter and that's it it doesn't go anywhere. It feels like it only has 4 gears I don't get it. I bought it like this so I don't know what the previous owner did to it. I'd just like to know what the heck could be causing it.

Maybe they removed 5th to save weight :roll:  Sound like a bent fork to me.

Bent or worn shifting forks, worn pins, worn drum, broken trans shaft snap ring.... I'm sure there are probably others...

Well not quite sure where the shifting forks are but Im taking the bike apart now to see if I can find them. Thanks for the info guys!! I'll do some research to help me get through the work!

Oh, do yourself a huge favor and get a Clymer manual.
It has a wealth of info in it that you will need.

I have an OEM manual will this be any help? Thanks again I'll keep you posted, so far I only have the plastics, subframe, shock, swingarm, and air box out of the way. Trying to decide how the hell I'm going to get this engine casing out of the frame. You don't happen to know if I have to take the head off first do you?

to take out the complete engine out of the frame,1. pull the swingarm as much as possible to the rear.
2. now you have to lift up the engine and a little bit more on the gear box. 3. turn i t with the gearbox first to the right side out of the frame ...but watch out, that it not slip out of your hands...

to install the engine, take these steps back...  :-)

While I'm in the middle of all of this do you think it'd be a bad idea to get my frame dipped in chrome??

All depends on the look you are going for and why you want it chromed.
Remember that chrome is porous which is bad on a dirt bike considering the usage.
If you want a deep luster and to be more corrosion resistant then you need to get it copper plated, then Nickel plated and then chromed.
If you don't get it copper plated first you are asking for a rust problem on a dirt bike.
If you don't nickle plate it you won't get that deep luster most people want.

Thanks alot sand, I had no idea. I was actually just wanting to sand blast it and paint it something that wouldn't wear off easily or rust thats why I was considering chrome but I didn't realize I needed to have it copper plated and then nickel plated to change its oxidation properties. What do most people refinish there frames with?

most frame's are nickle plated.    not crome.  (old race frames etc.)

the frame of my 2000 gasgas ec300 were chromed and alu-subframe... very nice look but chrome has more weight than just paint and in case of weldings you have  to rechrome the whole frame for an good look again...

Going to try and have the gearbox opened tonight.... question , wwhen I had my clutch replaced the guy said the basket was severely worn... would this cause problems?
