Hard Starting - Yet another thread

I searched for a while and didn't find what I was looking for so here goes.

2003 KX500 engine
Freshly plated cylinder
of course, plug is good.

Always hard to start cold, not too bad once it is run.  Much of the problem is I'm old and have had 3 knee surgeries.  Seems to like about 1/4 throttle when I start and I must make sure I have the starter all the way at the top.  I might not be getting full stroke as the engine is in a 450F frame and it might hit the footpeg sooner.  I'd like to hear what others use as a starting procedure and what timing specs others might be running to make it easier to start.

When cold, I lean the bike over until fuel comes out the carb overflow.
Straighten the bike up.
Pull the choke, kick it a few times and it starts right up but I kick it a full stroke.
You might want to invest in a compression release from Larry Wiechman.
You'll be glad you did.

I've tried the "lean it over" trick to simulate the tickler on my 490 Maico but it hasn't helped.  The compression release just might be what I need, thanks for the heads up.

the tickler on the maico and the lean over trick, are oly ways to make sure thats enough gas is in the carb...  :wink:

starting the big smoker is to know the right methode to kick it. if its cold i need 10-12 kicks , if its warm never more than 3 ...  :-)

I lift the piston to top dead center, where is the most compression. then lift the kicker to 3/4 of its way from bottom to top. next kick means to start softly, if you feels you com over the tdc give more strength to the kick.

and all started with a big bang ...  :mrgreen:

compression release is the next big thing, i want to install. it will make it easier...  :-D

Mine will start cold in 3-6 kicks even if it has sat for months.
Warm.... if I do it right (Not tired) 1 kick...
But then I sleep with mine under my pillow so I know it pretty good  :-D

i changed my carb-setting today than 3 kicks in cold condition and the big smoker has barked louder than the neighbors dog...  :lol:

yes... in the first time of my projekt, i had nothing. in the oem-spare-parts-listings are much parts, but not the stock carb-setup... i bought the standard-needle and all pilot-jets for k5... main-jets i have always from 150- 190 in spare . was a long way with much headscratching... and as i had it running, i found this site and also your jetting-guide and saw, i was on the right way...  8-)

Agree with Sandblaster, my K5 likes a gulp of raw fuel in the carb when cold for easier starting. lean over to the left until fuel dribbles out the overflow hose, then kick, mine lites right off after about 3 kicks. One or two kicks hot depending on my leg strength.. LOL

i do the lean-over with all dirtbikes where is a carb in, to make sure that the carb is floated, before starting...  :-)

i saw a guy,that were kicking, kicking, kicking.... and still silence around the bike. i said to him, lean it to the left and look for gas that comes from overflow... after that he did only one kick and his bike was running...  :lol: .. 2-strokes are my religion...  8-)
