Modernizing 2005 kx 250 suspension!
« on: March 18, 2013, 08:40:19 AM »

I am curious if forks and rear shock off a newer 250f or 450f would bolt up to 2005 kx 250 with stock or aftermarket tripple clamp. If anyone has experience with doing this or knowledge of so,please give me your thoughts.Thank you in advance!

Your not wrong, first i would gold valve rear shock,as well as use there rebound separator valve.Make sure spring right for your weight,Forks are grim in std form, the valving is rubbish ,get gold or something similar valving to fix this up,plus the short spring in the base valve assembly is to hard,i think std about 2.86 we end up putting 2.2 in there ,makes forks plusher. But if you want the best production kx fork ,kx250f 13 ,they are slighly different to the 11,12 model inside, and are not as harsh as the kyb on the 450,s kx.The kyb sss on the yz are better than the kyb on the kawi as well,If it was me i would just modify the std stuff to save money,Than i would change the head angle or at least get a different set of triple clamps to get it to handle properly, than i would change the squish for less compression so you can rev the s**t out of it for maximun fun,a pc pipe,a heavier flywheel and some jetting changes go a long way to make this bike modern. And if you still have money left ,micropolish the transmission and have the crank balanced too.Once you done that ,go out and blow some 4 stroke in the weeds.

Mods that have been done. Motor completely redone by Pat Coleman. Vforce, 13oz fww, new sprockets 13/52, new chain&guide, jet kit. Suspension has RT GV front and rear and revalved for my weight which is 175lb. It just dosnt seemed blanced. Majority of riding is single track woods and trails. It stills feels very harsh and unbalanced.Bike dosnt want to settle down and turn in tight stuff. The bike screams with torque and speed. I love it. Just need to figure out the right suspension setup.

Did you change the base valve spring?STD way to hard in the forks. Is it to hard midstroke or right threw the stroke? It not hard to change the base valve settings.Have you got the specs for the gold valves, they come with the kit, check your oil level,to much can make it harsh.ktm are known for this, pull 20 ml out of fork from new ,and they go from harsh to acceptable.

Good to see you back! Send your suspension over to WER or Works Enduro Rider. Drew Smith is the owner and can get your KX working right in the single track. Been using him for about 12 years or so. Also, stick a set of 03 KX125/250 forks on your bike, revalved ofcourse, and they are way better than the 04 up forks. I did it to my 04 KX250/500 hybrid. They are bladderless and soak up the small stuff much better than the later bladder forks. My wifes 03 KX is a cadillac in the rocks.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

You don't need to replace your suspension, it just needs to be set up/tuned/valved by someone that can do a good job.

The big problem for the fork was the low-flow valve...  Not so good for trail riding.  But you've got that done already with the Gold Valve.  Beyond that, the fork and the shock can be made to ride very nice.

And it might be as simple as fresh fluid front and rear and having the clickers and preload properly adjusted.  I can't tell you how many bikes I've made a lot better by simply adjusting the clickers and the preload on the shock.

My bike?  07 KX250.
