I don't think I could ever do such a thing to a dirtbike. Especially the KX500, being that it was designed for racing and not for street use. The suspension is whacked for the street, tires, lights, exhaust. I guess I just enjoy offroading too much to think of ever converting a offroad bike to the street. Don't get me wrong, I ride street, just not on a dirtbike. :-/ Anyway, kits are made, I believe somebody here has one they are selling.

I have turned mine into a Supermoto but it takes a bit of effort and I live in England (UK) which has less over the top emmissions controls.

I have fitted Talon hubs with a 3.5" front and 4.25" rear Excell rims, a 320 millimeter front Braking wavy disc.
I made my own homemade wiring loom for the lights/horn using switchgear from the left bar of an Honda XL125 (doesn't matter that much what bike it comes from but I wanted indicators and it had to have the Off/ PO/ lights on switch in one and an indicator plus the Main/dip switch, oh and a horn switch.
All on the left side.

I put the killswitch on the right.

I used a Elextrex lighting coil and a Boyer Bransden regulator/rectifier to supply a rectfied current to the battery.

A pushbike speedo was fitted but I now have a Panoram endurance digital speedo.
I have a UFO Ghibli front light (that I think looks pretty good) and the rear light has LED bulbs to reduce power needs.
I still want a Eline 200 watt lighting coil though cos that would be a fair bit better than the coil I currently have.

Gearing, I currently use 16/47 but bear in mind I have smaller than standard wheels so that only gives a top speed of just over 100 mph.........

It would do that up a big hill though and get there pretty quick :D

One thing that helps is to have a clear petrol tank because if your mixing juice at the pump it helps when you can see how much petrol you are going to need, then you can switch of the petrol tap (to stop unmixed oil getting through while you do it) and work out how much petrol your adding and then add the oil first.

That way when you add the petrol, it mixes it far better than putting the petrol in then when the tanks full, trying to add the oil and trying to slosh it around

Don't expect to have fun on straight roads as you won't but I love it to bits on the bumpy twisty roads.

I street legalized my kx in California cuz they keep closing areas to off road vehicles.  So street licensed gets me there.  I pulled all the lights off after getting the plate.  I am selling the baja designs kit that just went to inspection and came off the bike.

Oh boy, well to start with every state has different laws so head to your local sec. of state and ask for a on-road equipmment inspection form, a assembled titling  form, and a ownership certification form. Now you are about to start your wallet draining project with the list of costly items they give you on those forms. Here in Michigan a $500 fine and impound cost  for first time offenders has driven many of us to that same question.Michigan regulations state the following:

 head light (high&low beam)
 horn
 speedo
 tail light/brakelight
 license plate light
 left side rear view mirror
 DOT approved tires
Ok,  then comes writers cramp, OH YEA ,you must write out how, where and when you bought and installed or modified  this motorcycle on a ownership certification form. The next step is to stop at the local police station and have them inspect the bike and sign these forms. Now you need to go back to sec. of state with your OFF-ROAD VEHICLE title and file for a new " ON-ROAD VEHICLE TITLE " and now they will send a new "ON-ROAD VEHICLE TITLE" and a "STATE MADE" vin tag in about 8-10 weeks. Now you can call and ask your state police where and when they would be able to apply to your new vin tag on your  "RE-Titled" motorcycle . Nope!! your not done yet, call and fight to get your insurance company to sell insurance to you for your " RE-TITLED" motorcycle (they don't like that) and then head back to the sec.of state apply for your plate . You almost think they don't want you to do this don't ya ?
GOOD LUCK, and no I have not received my new title or tag after 3 months
