86-88 cylinder and power valve i.d Help!
« on: February 20, 2013, 06:27:47 AM »
Hello all,
I recently purchased a spare cylinder online for my kx 500.
I am building an early 86-88 engine.
The spare that i received in the mail had steel power valves in the cylinder. I have one set of steel valves already, as well as other aluminum sets.
Here's where it gets weird to me. I open the package and find out this cylinder has had extensive porting and has a serial number stamped into the front top left of the cylinder, and no kips stamp .
When I remove the valves for inspection I just happened to compare the steel set of power valves to an aluminum set and what a difference!
The ports in the aluminum set are way bigger and the timing marks on the operating rod are in different positions.
I then tried swapping the operating rods between the sets and can't get them operate/timed when switched.
Now for the other weird part. I compared both my steel sets and the timing marks are different.
So I have 2 matching aluminum sets
One steel set where the timing marks match the aluminum set and,
One steel set with altogether different timing marks.
Anyone else experience this? I have three different types of valves for the 86-88?
Just by the way things line up I seem to be getting the best timing position with a set of aluminum valves.

I've painted the timing marks on the operating rods in red paint
Your looking at
Notice the one rod with different timing location
