Messed up the idle screw, help!
« on: January 04, 2013, 04:37:55 AM »
Hi!

I am new here, but been lurking from sweden for a while.

I need some help with my idle screw.
I just bought a kx250 -05, and as a novice I was happy to get out on my new spiked wheels in the snow, but heres the problem, I tried to adjust the idle for the cold weater while it was not runnin.
I came about 1 kilometer before the engine died on me. I knew, I f*cked up!

My problem now is that it wont start, and I can find the setting for the idle screw.
Tried to kick start it with a few settings, but no luck.

My plan was a whole day on the bike tomorrow, and I hope someone can help me?

Thanks in advance!

I think the idle screw is the least of your worries, sounds like you seized it, did you re-jet for the colder weather?  you don't adjust idle for cold weather, you need to adjust the main and pilot for cold weather, they must be richer for the cold. there are two external adjustments on the card 1. is the idle, black plastic screw looking affair on the left side and 2. the air screw, located on the left side back part of the carb, its a brass looking affair with a screwdriver slot.

Ok, so you mean that I should be able to get it running again by just kick it?
Or do I in this situation need to do any mechanical stuff?
Shouldt it start again if I screw down the idle screw to its original setting?
Weather is not cold here anymore so I just want to get it running again.
(Sorry for being so stupid, but you dont learn if you dont ask)

running and just died and won't start but will kick over.  Most likely a reed or fouled plug.  if you have compression, even a little it should run or act like it wants to  run.
What is your jetting? do you have spark?

the key here Alward that I picked up was Sweden and winter = lean unless jetted properly for winter. fouled plug, reed, I don't think it would have quit, would have been hard to start for sure if at all.  I would pull the pipe and look in the exhaust at the piston to see if it was smeared, could change the plug and try and hope that was it. the newer model KX 250 weren't like the old ones that came way to rich, later models were closer.

Boon, if it idled before it stopped it is fine, did you jet it richer? if the person you bought it from hasn't ridden it since summer, it was jetted for summer temps. You buy the bike, and now its winter and you decide to go for a ride and the temp is probably at least 50 degrees cooler than summer, so off you go down the rode and it quits. were you going slow or fast? if fast you shouldnt have fouled a plug. need more information

Ya but he also said he was riding it and it died and would not restart.  If it was jetted rich could have fouled a plug in that short of time.  If he seized it he would not have been kicking it over.  A busted reed petal would be running fine, die and not resart.  Too lean might have put a whole in the top of the piston if he had too hot of a plug too.
checking the exhaust side is not a bad idea, if he was having a hard time kicking it, if it seemed harder that before the ride.  Is there really summer in Sweden??  I just thought it was just cold and then balls cold :-D
