from the past just for fun!!
« on: November 21, 2012, 01:55:46 PM »
Nothing like 3 KX500's tearing down a dry lake bed!!!!

Team Green 1993 from left to right....Ted Hunnicutt, Larry Roeseler, Danny Hamel.

I once heard my buddy Bill ask Danny Hamel after a race....
"How can someone who looks like a high school band tuba player go so d**n fast on a bike?!"

Yep, I've seen this one and it's a classic out maybe out at Soggy Dry Lake. Look at Danny's muffler and how it's different from the other two. I used to always see his bike with with the modified team green muffler that Destry Abbott always used. I've mentioned this before, but they would cut off three inches of the oem muffler and weld a sparky on the back.

Just to show you how supportive Team Green was back in the day, I had one of their Sparky/muffler setups on my 1991 KX250. My old man and I had the same exact bike (so we could swap parts out at the races if needed) and we were racing most of the Hare and Hounds and European Scrambles for a good decade from mid eighties to the nineties. At one of the races, we set up our pit next to Team Green and my old man who is a master mechanic, but cheap as they come,  starts pulling out our sparky inserts, hitting them with the torch, and blowing them with air to get all the carbon off the screen. One of the Team Green mechanics saw him doing this and gave us a bunch of Sparky inserts for free, and gave me a new chain for my bike!! They were a great group of guys who were very approachable and always willing to lend a hand.

For those who say that the KX500 has the handling characteristics of a Bradley tank..........

Let Mr. Ty Davis prove them wrong......

My sig says "it may not handle the best"........My sig is actually something I've had to say numerous times to dudes that show up on brand new machinery and ask me why I don't get a newer bike..... 8-)

I still think the k5 is one of the best handling bikes in the desert

Only a few modern bikes come to mind that are on par.  One is orange, other is blue and yellow. And starts with husa

kx450f VS KX5. At the end Terry comments his old KX5 was "Much better then he thought it would be". Fun stuff.

Here is another jewel from yesteryear....

In 1991 Honda's frustration created a bike which they labeled "The Monster"......In an attempt to keep up with the triple digit speed KX500's, Honda took an XR600 and punched it out to 680cc, put in a custom cam, etc, etc.........Honda rider and legend, the late Bruce Ogilvie said that they had to modify their riding styles because they were not used to a bike with so much power.

The bike was pretty fast but overcame its original design capabilities.......the bike destroyed itself from the inside out about 1/3 the way into the race.

That Baja 1000 by the way was won by the KX500 mounted team of Larry Roeseler, Ted Hunnicutt Jr, and MX legend Marty Smith.

Here is a rare picture......don't laugh.  Team Greens first year in Baja at the Baja 1000......From left to right you have Randy Morales, the legend himself Larry Roeseler (rockin the porn stash and mullet)and Pat Boulland.  Check out the insane fairing they were running on the K5.  They ditched it the following year.
