87 kx 500 piston revisted
« on: November 15, 2012, 02:43:03 PM »
Halo again , I've read the post about 1988 to 2004 piston will fit an 87 kx 500. I've talked to two different bike shops in Cincinnati. They tell will that won't work on an 8- kx500. I'm fairly new to the site all help would be greatly appreciated    Where can I vet  good piston kit . Thanks

Hello.
The book says 87 KX500 only.
However, other members on this site have used the newer piston from 85-04.
The 87 has a flat top with one ring.
The newer design is 2 rings with a dome top.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Ideally  u should recut your head, squish/dome
larry does a good job http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,6445.0.html

The new 88on piston is the flat[almost} top two ring and should fit ok but u would be running lower compression
The porting is similiar to the 88 so you should have no issues with a ring catching a port unless it had been radically ported to suit the single ring
