2002 kx250 any good?
« on: September 22, 2012, 09:13:26 AM »
I found a decent 2002 kx250 for cheap but when I look up test and reviews online they always seem to be bad reviews. Mostly saying that the engine has a weak low end and nothing up top either. Was it a bad year for the kx? Guy said it was a 2004 (good reviews) but it's not :-(

02 was a fair bike ;i had one from new.Prefered 03 ,04 in handling department ,03 needed alot of mods to get it to go hard though? there is plenty of mods you can do to 01 to 04 engines to suit your needs in the power department?Team green use to have porting maps as well as other things for these models but could be deleted by now.Eric gorr books are another good source.

I have an 02 kx 250.
The L series kx 250's ran from 1999-2002. In 1999 Motocross Action gave the ''Bike of the Year'' award to the kx 250.
Other models such as the rm 250 and the yz 250  took the honors through the rest of the model years run of the L series.( mostly due to yz redesigning the ports in 02 and then suzuki copying the port timing and improving on yamahas design in 03.
I've never had any problems with the bike for power reasons, and I have also  owned and raced the 2002 rm 250 and my friends 2003 yz 250. My kx is the only 250 I still have.
The 2003 kx 250 received poor reviews for engine strength compared to the earlier models.
I can't say anything bad about those year kx 250's, The engines are quite reliable and parts are getting cheap for them.

If memory serves me correctly, I believe I read an article that most all the Kawasaki support racers back in the early 2000's were running the imfamous killer hp "98" cylinder all the way up to '02...
01' KX500
'84 GPz1100
'87 GSX-R  750
'06 HD Fatboy
'73 Kawi H1
'03 CRG KX500 Shifter kart

I came across that also :-) One article said that most riders were changing it to 99 or 2000 piece by piece. They never mentioned what pieces but I can guess it would be the cylinder and maybe electronics and pipe. Doesn't matter, guy sold the bike. :-(
