KX85 for the youngun
« on: September 28, 2004, 06:27:48 AM »
Took my little Jesster out in the woods Sunday.  He's come a loooong way since he first started riding two years ago.  He's now 7-3/4 and has pretty much mastered the PW80.  I mean he's riding trails that would give a novice adult a hard time.  He flat foots on it and I've raised the rearend up 1".  So........   I'm thinking KX85.

Jesse will be 8 in December.  He is 4'4" and weighs in the mid 80s and is the second largest boy in his second grade class.  He's a very good rider but I'm just affraid that it might be enough to scare him off.  I'll have to lower it 3-4" but that's do-able.  I like the KX because links are available to lower it and it has the KIPS valve for better bottom end.

What would happen if I disabled the KIPS?  Would it tame the thing down a bit?

Any other input?

Looks like I made a deal on an '03.  Someone ran straight gas through it and now it's got a completely rebuilt engine.  Straight plastic, tires, chain, sprocket all with plenty of life.  It was used at some sort of MX clinic, I think.

I found it on Cycle Trader.com but it's about 220 miles away.  Fortunately a pal of mine who loves to wheel & deal in MX bikes lives nearby and actually knows some of the players involved.  He went and checked the bike out and gave it two thumbs up.

They were asking $1800, he told them he was authorized to offer $1500.  They turned him down at 16.  As he was leaving the boss called back and let it go.  I guess they had a small fleet of them and this was the last one.

My pal got the details that the engine was done at a dealer, and he said it's a pretty nice bike.  I'm pretty excited.  Don't know when I'll get it yet.  But Jesse thinks a new bike is out unless he improves his grades.  Let's hope he does!

GWcrim,
Sounds like you did the same PW80 thing I did, extend the shock mount tab on the swingarm (a 2nd hole) to raise the rear end. I had to add a chain roller to handle the slack.  On the detune part, I have been doing lots of thinking on the same thing for an 250MXer for my wife.  Kind of like the reverse KDX200 thing, corking it instead of uncorking it.  Here's what I have come up with so far.

 - reed spacer (more bottom end)
 - flywheel weight (more grunt)
 - close off the airbox top, ie make a cover with a smaller hole (slows the air, slows the power) Stock KDX200 cover may work (should be lots around gathering dust)
 - muffler insert, ie I was going to make a round insert to put inside the pipe where the muffler attaches to reduce the ID of the tailpipe (more backpressure = slower power & quieter)
 - unhooking the powervalve will also take away top end and enhance bottom end

Keep it mind that I haven't actually done this yet but I know it will all work and may not all be required.  That is a good idea to do that to the 85.  I would like to get an 85 for my son for the great suspension, but the power is too severe.  The detune is a good option. Cam.

I figure he's gotta learn sometime and danged if I get him some sissy 4 poke trail bike.  At first he'll only ride in fields or smooth trails.  But as he gets the hang of it, we can venture out.  Next summer will be tough.  But he'll do well, I'm sure.

I also had the idea of an exhaust restriction, like the PW comes with.  Just have to see what happens.

I just remembered another easy one, close up the reed stops. Probably has metal reed stops. Cam.
