Hello there, I wanted to introduce myself to the community.  I have been riding motorcycles for roughly 25 years, both street and dirt.  I own a 1981 Yamaha YZ465 with a wild build and decided I wanted something newer with a broader power-band and weight reduction.  That is why I ended up with this 2003 KX500 that is in great shape!  I will post a couple pictures within the next couple days for all to see!  Black plastics, FMF Gnarly pipe and PC spark arrest silencer, Pro Taper bars and geared down Pro Taper sprockets with a new DID O ring chain and brand new knobbie!  It also came with a spare rear rim with a brand new 10 scoop paddle tire mounted!

I love the new bike, it runs circles around my YZ!!!  The brakes are fantastic, compared to my old school drum setup...  I have been thinking about doing a few "freshen up" mods.  Does anyone know if the cylinder came with nikasil from the factory?  I was thinking about upgrading the bearings, nikasil the cylinder keeping the factory bore, with a coated wosnner piston with the window mod.  I also would like the head re-cut to help with detonation and give a cleaner burn with emphasis on low-mid torque.  Top it off with a set of good reeds, a reed spacer and a simple flashing clean-up of the ports.

I bought my son a 1997 KX60 last fall and he has been loving it!  This has been his first motorcycle experience, let alone 2 stroke with a clutch and gears!  I am amazed how fast he has picked it up... kids these days!  This bike now has the Eric Gorr transfer port mod and a Pro Circuit Works pipe and silencer.  This bike is so freaking quick!  At 180 lbs it will power wheelie in gears 1-4, and I am at 4500 ft elevation!!!  Such a fun little sucker!   :-D

Welcome to the Site CBR,
There is plenty to peruse here if you can find the time.  Yes the Factory cyl. is Nikasil, and there are several places around the country the guys here have used.
Here is a recent build thread by a very helpful member who has documented alot of the info you may be interested in.

The guys here have been a pleasure to hang with and have been sharing their secrets, trials and tribulations with any who are in need.
Spend as much time riding with your boy as you can, that's something they never forget!
