Subframe broke!
« on: March 14, 2012, 06:15:09 AM »
My subframe is missing a piece of it on the exhaust side. I got a good deal on a 86 kx125 subframe my question is can I cut my steel subframe off weld mounts and attach the subframe?

I think you may find the 86 kx125 was framed like the 87 on 500s, the 86 250s were the same rear end, parts from those and the 1985 models will fit your 86 500.K.
And lo, I did loft the front wheel and carried it forth to the unbelievers, and cast it down before them and said unto them ''look now upon the might of my throttle control ye pitiful cretinous ones''
And the unbelievers did quake in their boots....

the 86 125 is a different frame to the 86 250s and5s, you need a 85 125,or 250 500, or an 86 250 or 500 as these have same rear end uni trak as 86 kx5.

just been re reading this, the 86 500 doesnt have a detachable subframe........if you cant fix it by welding in a piece of steel you need a full frame, but I wouldnt use an 85 125 frame, not sure if its same size.the 85 and 86 kx250 and 500 frames are the same, apart from not having a mounting for your rear master cylinder on the 85 models as these had drum rear brakes. Surely a good local fabricator can sort it if you havent got acess to the gear? K.

as for shocks, use 85/86  250/500, as the 86 frame dictates a remote nitrogen resevoir, not one mounted on the shock as per 87 kx5....K.

you can go to babbits online and compare what you have. it looks to me like you could do what you're asking, weld tabs and mounts to your 86 frame.   i agree with kwakman tho, i would try to have your frame welded first, unless there are other issues.

No major problems just a the pipe the rear number plate bolts to and the last silencer bracket bolts to that's the piece of subframe missing! Ill pass on the subframe and weld a piece in. Just to make sure the rear # plates off the 86 125 will NOT fit the 86 k5 right?
