1993 K5 motor into a 1996 KDX steel frame
« on: December 29, 2011, 11:38:06 AM »
I'm considering putting a 1993 KX500 motor into a 1996 KDX steel frame. Any body have any comments,,, good, or bad. The frame seems to be the same as a KX250 except for the attached sub-frame. I'm not jumping right on this project,, I have several projects in head of this,,,just trying to line up my ducks.

That would be an interesting conversion.
The only draw backs I can see is the suspension and possibly handling.
With conventional forks and a weaker rear I wonder how it would perform?
You could re-spring and re-valve or use a USD set up but then you have additional expense.
I would consider selling the KDX and the chassis parts from the KX500 and then buy a newer KX250 with a blown engine.
As always the newer the donor bike the longer you will be able to buy aftermarket as well as OEM parts.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Thanks Sandblaster, I do at this point plan to use the suspension from the KX500 re-valved,,, I do believe that is the first thing I will try to confirm for the reasons you site. Planning to add alwards stator and be street legal. Going for a somewhat dual sport trail worthy bike.
