Riding Gear Question!
« on: September 04, 2004, 09:43:40 AM »
Hi guys, I have not been able to ride in a while, due to disk problems in my neck.    I was wondering if anyone rides with a neck roll or proctor? Can anyone tell how much mobility you loose by useing one and what are the best ones to use.

I am going to start riding again soon like Labor Day! :)

I've raced with one (neck roll) but since stopped. I couldn't turn my head and see enough to feel comfortable with it on. Do you have a kidney belt?

On a similar note, I never gave much thought to how ridiculously thin the hip pads are in my AXO riding pants (1/8"). That was until I recently crashed on my hip in a big pile of rocks.  After limping around work for a couple of weeks (and generally feeling sorry for myself) I bought some 3/8" aerolite closed cell foam at a foam shop ($4) and built thicker pads. Used the old ones as a template, glued on some velcro, and cut a grid pattern (3/16" deep) with razor knife on the outside for more flexibility.  Havent crashed them yet but they sure feel better than the "tissue paper" originals. Cam.

In April of 2003 I herniated the disc between c5-c6 while riding. This resulted in weakness, numbness in my Lt. shoulder/ arm/ hand, and several trips to a Neuo sugeon. I did not have surgery and was not able to ride most of the summer - in order to let it heal - so I would'nt have to have surgery.
Long story short - I'm 100% now.    LET IT HEAL, so you don't risk nerve damage.

I wear an EVS RC-1. Yes its thicker but I wanted the support. You will be amazed how well it works. It did take a while to get used to it but like a helmet I would not ride without it now. Especially if you jump high or just go balls out down desert roads.

Everyone is different so try both on and pick one.

Take care hope this helps.
